LINUX
Na, its not just another blurb about linux. And its not a techno-babble either ... just a friendly blog :) I thought I would just put into words why I really like linux so much.
Now, the distro-version I'm using is Mandrake linux 9.0 which has kernel version 2.4.19. This is just for the info you know ...

First of all linux is very customizable. You don't like a thing you can always change it. Yeah even if you don't know how to do it there are HOWTOs
which tell you just how to do it. It doesn't leave you helpless at the mercy of the company which wrote the OS. Of course ther are time when you feel like
"what the hell ... why can't this be simpler ...". But the satisfaction you get when you do something your way more than outweighs the amount of trouble
you have taken to do it.

And then its based on unix which is like the "baap" of all the OSs. The unix philosophy of writing many small programs which do specific tasks rather than one
huge monster which does everything applies to linux too.

The console is another wonderful thing in linux. I have used bash but even ksh, csh all of them give you tremendous power. You need to invest some time first
but then power doesn't always come with simplicity! And once its into your muscle memory you find that keyboard is much friendlier than mouse.

And the Desktop Environments ...GNOME, KDE ,sawfish, blackbox ...they are all just beautiful. The funda is that you are not forced to use a window manager or DE that comes with the OS. You have lots of choices .... Pesonally I think that GNOME 2.0 is good. KDE 3.0 is slow in starting but its on par with GNOME even better in some areas. X might be slower sometimes but with a 32 MB VRAM and 3d accelerater card I find it to be as good as any other Graphical system I have seen.

Then comes a time when you fall in love with any or many of the gnu/linux tools, programs. Once you start using say vi then its hard to think of anything else to use. You don't have to buy a compiler or an ide ...its always there ...well i can continue on this but lets not get into that.
Best thing is the Free Software Spirit. After a certain point of time yopu feel a gratitude towards the FSF community which has made linux what it is today. So I guess its definitely worth a try. And then try as you may you can't help but use it. ;)
